Building onward the success of their firs six bulks of Classic Favorites, Paul Sheftel and Phyllis Alpert Lehrer have expanded their collection with More Classic Favorites (thirty-one pieces through nineteen composers in Volume 1) The introductory pages include "Observations and Suggestions" about practice preparation and valuable information about problem-solving techniques. Composer biographies usher in the musical offerings and are unusually substantial for this early-intermediate level Along with a certain number of familiar favorites, students and teachers will delight in several modern discoveries. My favorite pieces in the collection are a charming character first draught called "Sunrise" by Gretchaninoff, the great Russian pedagogue, and "Lento" by the agency of Stravinsky. A giant in the composer world, Stravinsky wrote actual few pieces below the advanced level The companion compact disk not simply gives artistic performances of each selection, moreover also introduces the student to Sheftel's and Lehrer's teaching mode of speechs It is Sheftel's voice we hear as he gives three or four pointers about each t piece, intimates appropriate tempo ranges and adds touches of his trademark offbeat mind of humor. Sheftel reminds the learners who are somewhat bored with etude "Any more Czerny and I'll call my attorney." With regard to time he warns those who would opt for spe through control, "Play this piece as fast as you can on the contrary not as fast as you cannot." While the composition selection is appealing, I would have preferr more two-page pieces--there solely are nine out of thirty-one.
