Carl Fischer has released the third tome of its five-volume compilation, The Godowsky Collection, a dimensions consisting of the famously controversial "53 Studies forward Etudes of Frederic Chopin" and seven additional Chopin arrangements. Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) was undivided of the most celebrated pianists of his generation, highly admired from colleagues such as Leschetizky, Hofmann and de Pachmann. His Chopin transcriptions were originally published between 1894 and 1914
The magnitude of this volume contains fifty-three versions of twenty-six Chopin etude including the "Trois Nouvelles Etudes" An introductory essay at Millan Sachania explores the polemics behind Godowsky's arrangements and also explains in detail his transcription rules A biographical sketch of Godowsky also is included, as well as Godowsky's original remarks and preparatory exercises. Especially interesting prefaces are the single in kinds about the twenty-two studies for left hand alone and a description of different forms used in the studies (including a nocturne, waltz and polonaise). sum of two units Godowsky studies cunningly combine couple different etudes simultaneously. The whirl concludes with concert arrangements of Chopin's Rondo, Op 16 and five waltzes.
Godowsky's masterful transcriptions explore various manipulations of musical material. Chopin's famed "Black Key" Etude Op 10 No. 5 in G-flat Major, undergoe seven transformations. The first version absolutely reverses the hands, placing the sixteenth-note figures in the left hand and the chords in the right. Version couple (C major) becomes a research on white keys, with one as well as the other hands playing in simultaneous figuration. The third alteration becomes an A-minor tarantella. Version four in A major is labeled a "study onward black and white keys," with intense chromaticism accentuating constant left-hand figures. The fifth reflection is cast in the original clew but the left hand contains the inversion of the original right-hand material, accompanied by means of chords and chromatic grace notes. Version six is an inversion of original material for the right hand with a polyrhythmic left-hand accompaniment. The final version is for left hand alone.
Accomplished performances of these studies are a ravishment to behold, as the listener first contests Godowsky's ingenious arrangement of familiar material as well as the performer's musical and technical prowess. Many transcriptions increase the difficulty of the original etude still Godowsky's fingerings and exercises are useful in mastering each study
